I use stitchfiddle.com to create charts for my knitting and crocheting. Its free.
This is good to know while the stitchworks site is down for upgrades....always good to have more than one resource. The difference is that stitchfiddle is internet based complimentary until you want to export your end product as any other file than png. Stitchworks is an hard copy application that can be downloaded to your pc and used with many more detailed / intricate created crochet symbol fonts and can even submit your own freehand drawing symbol. The crochet council uses the very basic ones for stitchfiddle and it is a great start for a beginner.
