Im flirting with the idea of buying one from aliexpress. Ladies in my knitting group have brought those pretty cheap red and white yarn winders and say those work fine.
I really only want to wind yarn cakes so I can dye them, so I guess those would be fine for me... but probably they are not heavy duty ones. :(

I have a reel that was my grandmothers! She is 40 years old but she is perfect. It keeps selling, you ask for manual winder. Although I do not know if it will be the same quality as that of the 70s. I saw some nice and cheap pages in China, but I really do not know the quality and if they work for a very intense use
I bought the Boye swift. It was terrible! I have resorted to using my knees to keep the hank tight and then wind into a ball. Its tricky but I was desperate ;P
